When to talk to the pharmacist before buying
- Rash or skin condition not improving after 7 days of OTC treatment — we may recommend a stronger steroid (some are P-only) or refer you for prescription.
- Suspected impetigo (golden crusts, spreading) — we run the NHS Pharmacy First impetigo pathway; we can assess and supply free without a GP visit.
- Wound that's red, hot, swollen, or weeping pus — likely infected; needs assessment, possibly antibiotics.
- Deep cut, burn larger than your palm, or a wound that won't stop bleeding — A&E or NHS 111. Don't self-treat.
- Mole that's changed shape, colour or size — see your GP. Pharmacy can't diagnose skin cancers, but we can point you toward the right care.
