Scabies & Pubic Lice

Scabies is an intensely itchy rash caused by tiny mites that burrow into the skin. The itch is often worse at night, and you may see raised spots or fine silvery lines, commonly starting between the fingers or on the wrists. It spreads through close, prolonged skin contact — it is not a sign of poor hygiene.

Scabies & Pubic Lice — your questions, answered

How is scabies treated?
With a permethrin 5% cream such as Lyclear Dermal Cream, applied to the whole body — our pharmacist will explain exactly how to use it and when a repeat application is needed. Everyone in the household, plus any recent close or sexual contacts, should be treated on the same day, even if they have no symptoms yet.
I've been treated but I'm still itching — has it failed?
Not necessarily. Itching commonly carries on for two to four weeks after successful treatment while your skin settles — it doesn't mean the mites are still alive. Wash bedding, clothes and towels at 50°C or higher, or seal unwashable items in a bag for at least three days, to avoid re-infestation. If new burrows appear, speak to our pharmacist or your GP.
What about pubic lice?
Pubic (crab) lice are passed on through close body contact, usually sexual, and cause itching in coarse body hair. They're treated with an insecticide cream or lotion from the pharmacy — Lyclear Dermal Cream treats crab lice as well as scabies — and current partners need treating too. Because pubic lice often travel with other infections, a sexual health check-up is sensible as well.
When should I see a GP?
See your GP if you're not sure the rash is scabies, if the skin becomes hot, swollen or weeping (signs of infection), if you're still itchy four weeks after finishing treatment, or if the person affected is a baby, elderly, pregnant, or has a weakened immune system. Crusted, flaky patches of scabies also need a GP review — that form needs stronger treatment.
