Moisturisers — your questions, answered

What's the difference between a lotion, a cream and an ointment?
Mostly richness. Lotions are the lightest and absorb quickly, creams are richer and suit most dry skin, and ointments are the greasiest and longest-lasting — best for very dry patches. Many people use a light lotion by day and a richer cream at night; our pharmacist can help you choose.
How do I choose the right moisturiser?
Match it to your skin. For sensitive or easily irritated skin, a fragrance-free option such as Cetaphil or Aveeno is a good start. For very dry skin, pick a richer cream such as E45. If your skin is prone to eczema, ranges like Aveeno Dermexa and E45 Eczema Repair are designed for exactly that.
How should I apply moisturiser?
After washing, while the skin is still slightly damp — that helps lock the moisture in. Smooth it on in the direction the hair grows rather than rubbing hard, and use it regularly: little and often beats one big application. A gentle wash such as Aveeno Body Wash or Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser helps too, as ordinary soap dries the skin.
Is there anything to be careful of?
Emollients can soak into clothing, bedding and dressings, and the residue is flammable — wash fabrics regularly and keep away from naked flames and cigarettes. And if your skin is cracked, very itchy or inflamed rather than simply dry, speak to our pharmacist — it may need treating as eczema rather than dryness alone.

Information only — always read the patient leaflet and ask our pharmacist if you're unsure. Prescription treatments are supplied only after a consultation and our pharmacist's approval.
