What is Epaderm Emollient Cream and Ointment 500g?

Epaderm is an emollient — a moisturiser for skin that is very dry, rough or prone to eczema. It comes in two forms in the same 500g tub size: a lighter cream that rubs in quickly, and a thicker, greasier ointment that can also be used as a soap substitute when washing.

How does it help?

Dry and eczema-prone skin loses water because the fatty barrier at the surface is patchy. The paraffins in Epaderm sit on top of the skin and form an occlusive layer that slows that water loss, while the softer waxes help hold moisture in the outer layer. Skin that stays hydrated feels less tight and less itchy, so there is less scratching and fewer flare-ups.

Who should take care?

Stop using it if the skin reddens, stings or reacts, and speak to us or your GP. Paraffin-based emollients are a fire risk: clothing, bedding and dressings that have been in contact with the product can catch fire much more easily, so keep away from naked flames and cigarettes, and wash fabrics regularly at a high temperature. The ointment makes a bath or shower slippery, so take care getting in and out. Take product from the tub with a clean spoon or spatula rather than your fingers.
