No forms to fill in beforehand, no tests to arrange — the pharmacist handles everything in the conversation.

A Hyde Park Pharmacy pharmacist during a confidential consultation Pharmacist-led care
  1. 1

    A relaxed, confidential chat

10–15 minutes with our pharmacist — by video, phone or in our private consultation room. They’ll ask about your health, your medicines and what you want from your contraception.

  2. 2

The pharmacist confirms the right option

Starting the combined pill? A blood pressure and height & weight check is part of it — done in store in a couple of minutes, or you can share recent readings on a remote call. The pharmacist decides what’s safe and suitable, and explains why.

  3. 3

    Walk out with your supply

Collect in store the same day, or have it delivered free. Up to 3 months’ supply to start, then usually 6–12 months at a time once you’re settled.

Who it’s for

Your questions, answered

The NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service is open to almost everyone who uses, or wants to use, the pill — here’s how it works in practice.

Is it really free?
Yes — completely. The NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service covers the consultation and the supply of your pill, and free emergency contraception too. There’s nothing to pay at any point, and no GP appointment is needed.
What ages does it cover?
The combined pill is available from your first period up to and including age 49. The progestogen-only pill goes up to and including age 54 for most types (49 for the drospirenone-only pill). Under-16s are welcome — the pharmacist will chat with you sensitively, make sure you understand your choices, and keep it confidential, in line with national guidance.
What if the pill isn’t right for me?
Our pharmacist will never supply something that isn’t safe or suitable for you. If the pill isn’t the right fit, they’ll talk through the alternatives and point you to the right service — for example Leeds Sexual Health for long-acting options like the coil, implant or injection, or your GP where that’s the better route.
Video call or phone call — which should I pick?
Whichever suits you — both are private, free and with the same pharmacist. For a video call we email you a secure link before your time; for a phone call the pharmacist rings the number you give us. And if you’d rather do it face-to-face, just walk in — no booking needed.
How much supply will I get?
When you start a pill (or restart after a break), the first supply is up to 3 months, so the pharmacist can check how you’re getting on. Once you’re settled, ongoing supplies are usually 6–12 months at a time — fewer trips, no gaps.
Is it confidential?
Completely. Consultations happen in our private consultation room, or over a secure call if you choose video or phone. With your consent a short note is shared with your GP so your record stays joined up — but if you’d rather it wasn’t, the consultation can still go ahead.

About this service. The NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service is a free NHS service provided under national Patient Group Directions. Our pharmacist carries out the full clinical assessment at your consultation and makes every supply decision — nothing on this page is a promise of supply. Blood pressure and height & weight checks are part of starting the combined pill. If a different method or service would suit you better, we’ll say so and point you to the right place — including Leeds Sexual Health (0113 392 0333) for long-acting methods, and your GP.
