Impetigo — your questions, answered
How do I get impetigo treated?
You can be assessed free at our pharmacy under NHS Pharmacy First — no GP appointment needed. The service covers anyone aged 1 and over. Our pharmacist checks the rash and, when it's suitable, supplies treatment on the spot — usually an antiseptic or antibiotic cream.
What does impetigo look like?
It usually starts as small sores or blisters — often around the nose and mouth — that burst and leave golden-brown crusts. It can be itchy but isn't usually painful. Impetigo is very common in young children, though anyone can get it, and it usually clears well with treatment.
Is impetigo contagious?
Yes, very — it spreads through close contact and shared towels, flannels or bedding. Children should stay off school or nursery until the patches have dried and crusted over, or until 48 hours after starting treatment. Regular hand-washing and trying not to scratch help stop it spreading at home.
When should I see a GP?
See a GP if the skin isn't improving after treatment, the infection keeps coming back, you feel feverish or unwell, or you have a weakened immune system. Rarely, impetigo can lead to a deeper skin infection (cellulitis) — so worsening redness, swelling or pain is worth getting checked promptly.
