Can I delay my period for a holiday, wedding or event?

How does period delay medication work?
Norethisterone is a synthetic version of the natural hormone progesterone. Keeping hormone levels topped up stops the womb lining being shed, so your period is postponed. Once you stop taking the tablets, your period normally arrives within a few days.
Is norethisterone a contraceptive?
No — it won't prevent pregnancy, so keep using your usual contraception. If you already take the combined contraceptive pill, you may be able to delay your period by running pill packets together instead — ask our pharmacist if that could work for you.
Is delaying my period safe?
For occasional use it's generally well tolerated, but it isn't suitable for everyone — that's why our pharmacist checks your health and medicines in the consultation first. Some people notice bloating, breast tenderness or light spotting while taking it.
When should I see a GP about my periods?
See your GP if your periods are very heavy or painful, irregular, or if you bleed between periods or after sex. Those things need a proper check rather than a delay tablet, and there are good treatments available.
