Constipation — your questions, answered

Which laxative should I choose?
They work in different ways. Bulk-forming laxatives such as Fybogel add soft bulk for gentle, gradual relief. Macrogols (Movicol, Laxido) draw water into the bowel to soften poo. Stimulants such as Senokot, senna tablets or Dulcolax (bisacodyl) get a sluggish bowel moving, and Dioctyl softens hard stools. Our pharmacist can match one to your symptoms.
What can I do without medicines?
Plenty — more fibre from fruit, vegetables and wholegrains, drinking more fluids, and regular movement all help. Try to keep a routine, give yourself time on the toilet, and never ignore the urge to go. These same changes also help stop constipation coming back once it has settled.
Can I take laxatives all the time?
Laxatives are best used short term, while changes to your diet and fluids take over. If you find you regularly need them to go, don't just keep buying them — speak to our pharmacist or your GP so the cause can be looked at properly and you get the right long-term plan.
When should I see a GP about constipation?
See your GP if constipation isn't improving with treatment, you're constipated or bloated regularly, or it has gone on a long time. Get advice quickly if there's blood in your poo, you're losing weight without trying, or you feel constantly tired — those symptoms should always be checked.
