Fybogel Hi-Fibre sachets contain 3.5 g ispaghula husk, a bulk-forming fibre laxative licensed to relieve constipation and maintain regularity. Take with plenty of fluid.

What is Fybogel Hi-Fibre Sachets?

Fybogel Hi-Fibre sachets are a fibre supplement for the relief of constipation and to help maintain regularity. Each sachet contains 3.5 g of ispaghula husk and is mixed with water to drink.

How does it help?

Ispaghula husk is a bulk-forming laxative: it absorbs water in the bowel to make stools softer and bulkier, which helps them pass more easily and naturally.

Key benefits

  • Bulk-forming fibre to ease constipation
  • Helps maintain regularity
  • Gentle, natural way to add fibre
  • Convenient pre-measured sachets
  • 3.5 g ispaghula husk per sachet

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Take with plenty of water and not immediately before going to bed. Don't use if you're allergic to any of the ingredients. Speak to our pharmacist if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, taking other medicines, or have any ongoing health conditions such as difficulty swallowing or a bowel blockage.

Common questions

How long does Fybogel take to work?
Not instantly. The licence says the effects start 12 to 24 hours after a dose. Fybogel is a bulk-forming laxative — the ispaghula husk draws water into the stool to make it softer and bulkier, rather than forcing the bowel to squeeze — so it works with your body over a day or so. Faster-acting options are on our constipation page.
Why does Fybogel have to be taken with plenty of water?
Because bulk-forming fibre needs fluid to swell safely. Taken dry, ispaghula husk can swell in the throat or gullet and cause choking or a blockage. Mix each sachet with a full glass of water, don’t take the last one immediately before going to sleep, and leave half an hour to an hour either side of other medicines, whose absorption it can slow.
Can I take Fybogel in pregnancy, and is it suitable for children?
The licence specifically covers relief of constipation in pregnancy, and ispaghula husk may be used while breastfeeding if changes to diet haven’t helped. It is not recommended for children under 6. For children over 6 the amount differs from an adult’s, so ask our pharmacist first — and mention any swallowing difficulty, which rules Fybogel out at any age.
When should I see someone instead of treating it myself?
Fybogel isn’t for a sudden change in bowel habit that has lasted more than two weeks, or for rectal bleeding that hasn’t been looked at — both need checking first. See your GP too if you have lost weight without trying, have ongoing tummy pain, or constipation that isn’t shifting. Our pharmacist can help you decide, or ring NHS 111.
