What is Buscopan Cramps Tablets 20?
Buscopan Cramps is a pharmacy medicine for painful cramps and spasm in the stomach and bowel, including the cramping of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Each coated tablet contains 10mg of hyoscine butylbromide and the pack holds 20 tablets.
How does it help?
Cramping pain happens when the smooth muscle in the wall of the gut goes into spasm. Hyoscine butylbromide is an antispasmodic: it blocks the nerve signals that make that muscle tighten, so the muscle relaxes and the cramp eases. Very little of it is absorbed into the bloodstream, so it acts mainly in the gut where it is needed.
Key benefits
- Relaxes the gut muscle that is in spasm, which is what causes the cramping pain
- Licensed for the symptomatic relief of IBS cramps as well as general stomach and bowel cramps
- Can be used from age 6 at the lower dose set out in the leaflet
- Small coated tablets that are swallowed whole with water, so they are easy to keep with you
Who should take care?
Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Not for children under 6. Do not take Buscopan Cramps if you are allergic to hyoscine butylbromide or any of the ingredients, or if you have myasthenia gravis, a blockage or narrowing of the bowel, megacolon, or narrow-angle glaucoma. If your pain is severe, does not settle, gets worse, or comes with a fever, nausea, vomiting, a change in your bowel habit, blood in your stools, dizziness or fainting, seek medical advice rather than treating it yourself. Do not take it continuously for more than two weeks, and talk to your pharmacist or doctor if you develop new symptoms or your symptoms have not improved within two weeks. Use with care if you have a fast heart rate or a heart rhythm problem, if you have a high temperature, or if you have trouble passing urine, for example because of an enlarged prostate. If you develop a painful, red eye with blurred or lost vision, get urgent medical help. It is not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. The tablets contain sucrose, so they are not suitable if you have a fructose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption or sucrase-isomaltase insufficiency. Our pharmacist will check the medicine is right for you before it is dispensed.
