What is Infacol Colic and Wind Relief Drops 85ml?
Infacol is an orange-flavoured, sugar-free, alcohol-free and colourant-free oral suspension of simeticone for babies with colic, griping pain or trapped wind caused by swallowed air. It comes in a bottle with a built-in dropper, so the dose is measured and dropped straight onto the back of the baby's tongue before a feed. It is licensed for use from birth.
How does it help?
Simeticone is an antiflatulent that is not absorbed into the body at all. It works physically in the baby's tummy by lowering the surface tension of the many tiny gas bubbles trapped in the milk and mucus, so they join into larger bubbles that the baby can bring up as a burp or pass as wind. The usual dose is one dropper full (0.5 ml) before each feed; if colic is still troublesome after three or four days this can be increased to two droppers (1 ml). It can be given at every feed, and improvement often builds up over several days.
Key benefits
- Licensed for use from birth onwards and can be given before every feed
- Simeticone is inert and is not absorbed, so it acts only in the gut
- Sugar-free, alcohol-free and colourant-free, with an orange flavour
- Built-in dropper gives a measured 0.5 ml dose without a separate syringe
Who should take care?
Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Do not give if your baby has had an allergic reaction to simeticone or to any of the ingredients; it contains methyl and propyl hydroxybenzoates (E218, E216), which can cause allergic reactions, sometimes delayed. If your baby is being treated with levothyroxine for a thyroid condition, ask our pharmacist or your doctor first, as simeticone can reduce its absorption. Shake the bottle before use and use within 28 days of opening. Colic is common and usually settles by itself; contact your GP, health visitor or NHS 111 if your baby has diarrhoea, vomiting, a temperature of 38°C or above, is not feeding, is unusually drowsy or floppy, or if you are worried or the symptoms do not improve.
