Feminine Care — your questions, answered

Do I need a special wash for intimate skin?
The vagina cleans itself, so nothing needs washing inside — ever. For the external skin, plain water or a mild, soap-free wash such as Femfresh Daily Intimate Wash is gentler than perfumed soaps and shower gels, which can upset the natural balance and cause irritation. Washing once a day is plenty.
Pads, tampons or a menstrual cup — how do I choose?
It's personal preference — all offer reliable period protection. Pads such as Always Ultra sit externally and are the simplest option; tampons such as Tampax Compak are worn internally, so they suit swimming and sport; a menstrual cup is reusable, making it cheaper over time and better for the environment. Many women mix and match across their cycle.
How often should I change a tampon?
Every four to eight hours, and never leave one in for more than eight — use the lowest absorbency that copes with your flow. This keeps the small risk of toxic shock syndrome (TSS) low. If you develop a sudden high temperature, a rash or feel very unwell while using a tampon, remove it and get urgent medical help. The hygiene guidance in the leaflet applies to menstrual cups too.
What helps with intimate dryness?
Dryness of the intimate area is common, especially around and after the menopause. A hormone-free moisturising cream such as Dr Wolff's V-san can be used regularly to keep the area comfortable. If dryness persists, or you have itching, soreness or bleeding, speak to our pharmacist — there are other options, and it's worth ruling out treatable causes.
When should I see someone about discharge or itching?
Some discharge is normal and changes through your cycle. Get advice if it changes colour or smell, or you notice itching, soreness or pain — common causes such as thrush are easily treated, and our pharmacist can often help the same day. See your GP if you also have pelvic pain, bleeding between periods or after sex.
