What is Balance Activ BV Treatment Gel 7 Tubes?

Balance Activ BV Treatment Gel is a clear, hormone-free gel supplied as seven single-use tubes. It is used inside the vagina to treat bacterial vaginosis (BV), a common cause of a thin grey or white discharge with a fishy smell. It is a medical device rather than an antibiotic, so it is available without a prescription.

How does it help?

A healthy vagina is slightly acidic, which keeps the natural lactobacilli in charge and unwanted bacteria in check. In BV that acidity is lost and the balance tips the wrong way. The gel replenishes lactic acid to bring the pH back down to its normal range, and the glycogen it contains feeds the lactobacilli so the natural balance can re-establish itself. One tube is used each night, ideally at bedtime, for seven nights.

Who should take care?

Always read the instructions before use. Do not use during a period, as the flow reduces how well it works, and avoid it if you are trying to conceive because the low pH can make conditions less suitable for sperm. It can be used in pregnancy, but if you have symptoms of BV while pregnant, speak to your GP or midwife before treating it yourself, as BV in pregnancy needs checking. BV and thrush have different symptoms and different treatments; if you are not sure which you have, or if you have pain, fever, bleeding between periods or symptoms that do not settle after the seven-night course, speak to our pharmacist or your GP. Do not use a tube that is damaged or out of date, and keep the pack out of the reach of children.
