Thrush is a common yeast infection, usually caused by Candida. In women it typically causes itching, soreness and a thick white discharge. It's very common and it isn't a sexually transmitted infection.

Thrush — your questions, answered

How is thrush treated?

Usually with an antifungal — an internal cream or pessary (such as Canesten) and/or a tablet (fluconazole). Our pharmacist can supply and advise on the right one after a few questions.

When should I speak to a pharmacist or GP?

Get advice if it's your first episode, you're pregnant, you're under 16 or over 60, you get thrush four or more times a year, or the usual treatments aren't working — you may need a different approach or a check.

Can I stop thrush coming back?

Avoiding perfumed soaps, wearing cotton underwear and not over-washing the area can help. If it keeps returning, our pharmacist can talk you through longer-term options.
