What is Clotrimazole 1% Cream?

An antifungal cream for treating fungal skin infections, including thrush and conditions such as athlete's foot and ringworm. It is applied to the affected area of skin. Standard 20 g tube.

Common questions

What can clotrimazole cream be used on, and what can it not be used on?

It’s licensed for fungal skin infections — athlete’s foot, ringworm, fungal sweat rash and candida (thrush) on the skin, including candidal nappy rash, vulvitis and balanitis. What it isn’t for is nails or the scalp: the product information specifically says not to use it there. For a fungal nail, see nail infection instead.

Will the cream on its own clear vaginal thrush?

Not on its own. The cream treats the external soreness and itching of the vulva, but thrush inside the vagina needs an internal treatment too — a pessary, an internal cream or an oral capsule — and many people use both together. Our pharmacist can talk you through the options; see our thrush page.

Does it affect condoms?

Yes, and it’s easy to miss. The product information warns that this cream can damage latex condoms and diaphragms and make them less reliable, so use another form of contraception for at least five days after using it. Worth knowing if you’re treating thrush or balanitis.

When should I get checked rather than treat it myself?

See a GP or nurse if this is your first episode of thrush, if you’re under 16 or over 60, if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, if you get thrush more than four times a year, or if it hasn’t improved with treatment. The NHS also advises a check if you have diabetes or a weakened immune system.
