Eczema & Dermatitis — your questions, answered

How is eczema treated?
Emollients — moisturisers such as the Aveeno Dermexa range, E45 or Doublebase — used every day are the foundation of treatment. For flare-ups, a short course of a steroid cream such as hydrocortisone 1% or Eumovate can calm the inflammation; our pharmacist will check which is right for you.
How should I use emollients?
Generously and often — even when your skin looks clear. Smooth them on in the direction the hair grows rather than rubbing them in, ideally after washing while the skin is still slightly damp. An antimicrobial emollient such as Dermol 500 can also be used instead of soap, which dries the skin.
What triggers eczema flare-ups?
Common triggers include soaps and detergents, heat and sweating, wool or synthetic fabrics next to the skin, and stress — and for some people certain foods or allergens. Keeping a note of when flare-ups happen can help you spot, and then avoid, your own triggers.
When should I see a GP?
See a GP if your eczema is weeping, crusting or has golden scabs — signs it may be infected — or if you feel feverish and unwell. Also get it reviewed if it isn't improving with regular emollients, or it's affecting your sleep or daily life.
