Oilatum Cream is a paraffin-based emollient for dry, itchy skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis and ichthyosis, in a 500ml pump bottle.
What is Oilatum Cream 500ml?
Oilatum Cream is an emollient - a moisturising cream licensed for contact dermatitis, atopic eczema, the dry itchy skin that often comes with age, ichthyosis and related dry skin conditions. It contains no steroid and no antihistamine, so it is the everyday moisturising part of dry skin care rather than a treatment for a flare. The 500ml pump is the size most people use when they are moisturising large areas such as arms, legs or the whole body.
How does it help?
The two paraffins sit on the skin surface and slow down the water that normally evaporates from it. Skin that holds on to more of its own moisture becomes softer and more flexible, which eases the tightness, flaking and cracking of dry skin and takes the edge off the itch that goes with it. It works while it is on the skin, which is why regular use, applied liberally, matters more than the amount used at any one time.
Key benefits
- Can be used as often as needed, which suits skin that dries out again through the day
- Licensed for eczema, contact dermatitis, ichthyosis and general dry, itchy skin
- Suitable for adults, children and older people, so one pump bottle can cover a household
- The 500ml pump is easy to use one-handed and keeps the rest of the cream clean
Who should take care?
Always read the patient information leaflet before use. This cream contains paraffin: clothing, bedding, dressings and bandages that have been in contact with it burn more easily, so do not smoke or go near naked flames, and wash fabrics regularly at a high temperature. It contains cetostearyl alcohol, which can cause local skin reactions such as contact dermatitis, and 0.5% w/w benzyl alcohol, which may cause mild local irritation or an allergic reaction. Tell our pharmacist if you have reacted to a paraffin-based emollient before. Speak to our pharmacist or your GP if the skin is weeping, blistered, crusted or looks infected, if the itch is stopping you sleeping, or if things are not improving with regular use.
