Jet Lag

Land better: practical help for sleep and body clock on long-haul trips.

Jet Lag

Jet lag is what happens when your body clock is out of step with the local time after flying across several time zones. It causes daytime tiredness, difficulty sleeping at night, poor concentration and sometimes an upset stomach or appetite. It's usually worse flying east, and it normally settles within a few days as your body adjusts.

Jet Lag — your questions, answered

How can I reduce jet lag?
Start shifting your sleep and meal times towards the destination's clock a few days before you fly, and switch your watch as soon as you board. On arrival, get out into daylight, stay awake until local bedtime, and keep any naps short. Drinking plenty of water and limiting alcohol and caffeine on the flight helps too.
Is there a tablet that helps with jet lag?
Melatonin — the hormone that signals to your body that it's time to sleep — is a prescription-only medicine in the UK. A short course can help suitable travellers re-set their sleep after a long-haul flight; our pharmacist can discuss it and supply it after an online consultation.
When should I get advice about it?
Jet lag itself isn't harmful and passes within a few days. Speak to our pharmacist or your GP if sleep problems carry on well after your trip, if you fly long-haul often and struggle every time, or if daytime sleepiness is affecting your driving or your work.

Information only — always read the patient leaflet and ask our pharmacist if you're unsure. Prescription treatments are supplied only after a consultation and our pharmacist's approval.
