Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) — your questions, answered

How do I know it's IBS and not something else?
IBS should be diagnosed by a GP first, because its symptoms overlap with other conditions that need different treatment. See your GP promptly if you have blood in your poo, unexplained weight loss, or a lump or swelling in your tummy — those symptoms are not typical of IBS and should always be checked.
What can I take for IBS symptoms?
Once IBS has been diagnosed, Buscopan IBS Relief eases the painful cramps, and Senocalm IBS Relief (simeticone) helps with bloating and trapped wind. Fybogel can help constipation-type IBS, while loperamide (Imodium) settles diarrhoea-type episodes. Our pharmacist can help you pick the right one for the way your IBS behaves.
Can changing what I eat help IBS?
Often, yes. Regular meals, plenty of fluids and cutting down on caffeine, alcohol and fizzy drinks help many people. Some find particular foods set off a flare-up — keeping a food diary for a few weeks helps you spot yours. If diet changes aren't enough, your GP can refer you to a dietitian.
Does stress make IBS worse?
For many people, yes — the gut and the brain are closely linked, and stress or anxiety is one of the most common triggers for a flare-up. Regular exercise, good sleep and finding ways to relax can genuinely reduce symptoms alongside any treatment you take. Be patient with yourself: IBS is managed, not cured overnight.
