What is Alverine Citrate 60mg Capsules 100?

Alverine citrate is an antispasmodic medicine licensed to relieve the cramping pain and discomfort of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), painful diverticular disease of the colon and period pain (primary dysmenorrhoea). Each hard capsule contains 60mg of alverine citrate. This 100-capsule pack is a generic made by Morningside Healthcare.

How does it help?

The wall of the gut and the womb is made of smooth muscle, and in IBS, diverticular disease and period pain that muscle tightens into painful spasms. Alverine acts directly on the smooth muscle to relax it, easing the cramp at its source. The usual adult dose is one or two capsules, one to three times a day, taken by mouth.

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Do not take if you have a blockage of the bowel (intestinal obstruction) or paralytic ileus, or if you are allergic to alverine or any of the other ingredients. Not for children under 12. If this is the first time you have had these symptoms, see your doctor before treating them. Do not use, and see your doctor as soon as possible, if you are aged 40 or over, have passed blood from the bowel, feel sick or are vomiting, have lost your appetite or lost weight, look pale and feel tired, have severe constipation, have a fever, have recently travelled abroad, are or may be pregnant, have abnormal vaginal bleeding or discharge, or have pain or difficulty passing urine. Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. See your doctor if new symptoms develop, if symptoms get worse, or if they have not improved after two weeks of treatment.
