Stomach & Digestion
Heartburn, indigestion, IBS, diarrhoea, constipation — the four pillars of stomach trouble. Most products are on the shelf; some IBS antispasmodics like Buscopan are pharmacy-only. Persistent symptoms need a proper conversation, not just antacids.

When to talk to the pharmacist before buying
- Heartburn or indigestion for more than 2 weeks — needs review, not just antacids on repeat. We may refer for an H. pylori test.
- Black stools, blood in stool, or vomiting blood — urgent — see your GP today or call 111.
- Unexplained weight loss alongside stomach symptoms — needs investigation.
- Diarrhoea lasting more than 48 hours, or in a child under 3, or with high fever — see us or your GP; Imodium is not appropriate for everyone.
- Constipation lasting more than a week, or with severe pain — needs assessment; laxatives have different mechanisms and we can pick the right one.
- IBS that's flaring — Buscopan is a good first line but if it's not enough, we have alternatives.
