Who should take care?

Common questions

Is lactose intolerance the same as a milk allergy?

No. Lactose intolerance is a digestive problem — your body makes too little lactase to break down the sugar in milk, so you get bloating, wind, tummy pain or diarrhoea. A cows’ milk allergy is an immune reaction and can cause difficulty breathing, itchy skin and swelling of the lips or face. Lactase does nothing for an allergy.

Will Milkaid cure lactose intolerance?

No — it doesn’t change how much lactase your own body makes. It supplies the enzyme so the lactose in that particular meal or drink can be digested, which is why it’s taken with the dairy rather than afterwards. The pack tells you when and how many to take, and our pharmacist can talk it through.

Can children take Milkaid tablets?

These are the adult chewable tablets. Crosscare makes separate versions for children — Junior tablets from three years, and drops from one year — partly because a larger tablet is a choking risk for a small child. Please don’t start a child on anything for suspected lactose intolerance without asking your GP or our pharmacist first.

When should I see a GP instead of managing it myself?

See your GP if symptoms keep returning, or if you have blood in your stools, bloating lasting three weeks or more, or you’re losing weight without trying — those need looking at properly. The NHS also warns against cutting dairy out long term without advice, because of calcium. More at lactose intolerance.
