What is Guardium Acid Reflux Control 20mg Gastro-Resistant Tablets 14?

Guardium Acid Reflux Control is a short course of esomeprazole 20mg, a proton pump inhibitor, taken by adults for reflux symptoms such as heartburn and acid coming back up into the throat. The pack holds 14 gastro-resistant tablets, which is a fortnight at the usual dose of one tablet a day.

How does it help?

Reflux symptoms happen when acid made in the stomach travels back up the food pipe and irritates the lining. Esomeprazole works on the acid-producing pumps in the stomach wall and turns down how much acid is made, so there is less of it to come back up. It reduces the amount of acid being produced rather than neutralising acid that is already there, so it is taken as a daily course rather than at the moment symptoms strike. It usually takes two to three days of daily dosing before the full effect is felt, and some people notice an improvement sooner.

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. This medicine is for adults aged 18 and over and is not for immediate relief of a single episode of heartburn, as it takes two to three days of daily dosing to work fully. Do not take it for longer than 14 days without speaking to your doctor. Do not use it if you have ever reacted badly to esomeprazole or to a similar medicine such as omeprazole, lansoprazole, pantoprazole or rabeprazole, or if you take nelfinavir for HIV. Speak to your doctor before using it if you have unexplained weight loss, difficulty or pain on swallowing, repeated vomiting, have vomited blood or passed black tarry stools, are over 55 with new or recently changed symptoms, have liver problems, or take clopidogrel, atazanavir, digoxin, methotrexate or medicines for epilepsy.
