What is Ovex 100 mg Tablets (Mebendazole)?

A single-dose chewable tablet for treating threadworm, a common and easily spread gut worm. It's usual to treat everyone in the household at the same time.

It contains mebendazole, which works in the gut to stop the worms taking up the sugars they need, so they can no longer survive.

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Don't use if you're allergic to any of the ingredients. Common questions

Does everyone in the house need treating, even without symptoms?
Yes, that’s the usual advice. Threadworm spreads very easily and people often carry it with no symptoms at all, so the NHS recommends treating everyone over 2 in the household at the same time — and the product information says the same. That’s why Ovex comes as a family pack and as a liquid, not only as a single dose.
Is there anything I need to do besides taking the treatment?
Yes, and it matters as much as the medicine. The eggs survive on bedding, towels, clothes and surfaces, so the NHS advises strict hygiene for two weeks alongside treatment: wash hands and scrub under the nails, shower or bathe in the morning, hot-wash bedding and nightwear, keep nails short, and never shake bedding, which scatters eggs. Can I take it in pregnancy, and what about children under 2?
Not in pregnancy — the licence rules Ovex out for anyone who is pregnant. If you’re breastfeeding, speak to our pharmacist first, as a small amount of mebendazole passes into breast milk. It’s also not recommended under 2 years of age. Where treatment isn’t suitable, the NHS advises hygiene measures alone for six weeks.
The itching has come back — what now?
Reinfection is common, because the eggs are so easy to pick up again — often because hygiene slipped or someone in the house went untreated. The pack leaflet covers repeat treatment and our pharmacist can check what’s right for you. If it keeps returning despite careful hygiene, or the person affected is under 2 or pregnant, see your GP.
