Dioralyte Relief Blackcurrant Sachets are a rice-based oral rehydration treatment that replaces the fluid and salts lost with diarrhoea, for adults, children and babies from 3 months on medical advice.
What is Dioralyte Relief Blackcurrant Sachets?
Dioralyte Relief is an oral rehydration treatment made with rice powder. Each blackcurrant-flavoured sachet is mixed with water to make a drink that replaces the fluid and salts (electrolytes) the body loses with diarrhoea. It is licensed for watery diarrhoea from a range of causes, including gastroenteritis, in adults, children and babies from 3 months.
How does it help?
Diarrhoea drains water and salts such as sodium and potassium out of the body. Each sachet puts those salts back in balanced amounts. The rice powder is broken down into glucose in the gut, and glucose helps the gut take up sodium - water then follows the sodium back into the body. The licence also notes that it helps over-loose stools return to normal. Pour one sachet into a glass, add 200ml of drinking water, mix until milky and drink the whole glass. For adults and children the leaflet gives up to 5 sachets a day for 3 to 4 days.
Key benefits
- Replaces the fluid and salts lost with diarrhoea
- Rice-based formula that also helps over-loose stools return to normal
- Blackcurrant flavour, made up as a drink with water
- For adults and children, and for babies from 3 months on medical advice
Who should take care?
Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Make each sachet up with exactly 200ml of drinking water (freshly boiled and cooled for babies) - never with milk, juice or other drinks. It is not for babies under 3 months, and for babies aged 3 months to 1 year it is used only on medical advice, with the amount worked out from the baby's weight. Do not use it if you have phenylketonuria, as it contains aspartame. Each sachet contains 190mg of sodium, so speak to our pharmacist first if you are on a low-salt or low-potassium diet, or have severe kidney or liver disease. If the diarrhoea carries on without letting up for more than 36 hours, or there is blood in it, a high temperature or signs of dehydration, see a doctor. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask our pharmacist before use. This is a pharmacy medicine - our pharmacist checks it is right for you before it is supplied.
