Dioctyl (docusate sodium) 100mg capsules are a stool-softening laxative for chronic constipation, particularly when straining needs to be avoided because of piles or an anal fissure.
What is Docusate (Dioctyl) 100mg Capsules 100?
Dioctyl capsules contain docusate sodium, a stool softener used to prevent and treat chronic constipation. It is often chosen when hard stools make going to the toilet painful, for example with haemorrhoids (piles) or an anal fissure.
How does it help?
Docusate sodium works as a wetting agent. It lets water and fats mix into the stool as it forms in the bowel, so the stool stays softer and passes more easily with less straining. It does not force the bowel to contract, and it usually takes one to three days to have an effect. Adults take up to 500mg (five capsules) a day in divided doses, starting with the higher amount and reducing as things improve; follow the pack and leaflet directions.
Key benefits
- Softens the stool rather than stimulating the bowel to contract
- Helps where straining should be avoided, such as with piles or an anal fissure
- Capsules are easy to take and can be spread through the day as the leaflet directs
- A 100-capsule pack suits ongoing management agreed with your pharmacist or GP
Who should take care?
Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Not for children under 12. Do not take if you have abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting, or if you may have a blocked bowel. Do not take at the same time as liquid paraffin (mineral oil). Laxatives work best alongside plenty of fluids and fibre; if constipation lasts more than a week, or you notice a new or unexplained change in your bowel habit, see your GP rather than continuing to treat it yourself. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask our pharmacist before use. Our pharmacist checks it is right for you before it is dispensed.
