What is DulcoEase 100mg Capsules 30?

DulcoEase capsules contain docusate sodium, a stool softener. They are used to prevent and treat ongoing constipation, and to soften hard, dry stools so there is less straining — which matters if you also have piles or an anal fissure.

How does it help?

Docusate sodium is a surfactant, sometimes called a wetting agent. It lets water and fat mix into the stool while it is still in the bowel, so the stool takes up more moisture and becomes softer and easier to pass. It works by softening rather than by forcing the bowel to contract.

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Not for children under 12. Do not take them if you are allergic to docusate, if you have tummy pain that is not caused by your constipation, if you feel sick or are being sick, or if you have been told you have a blockage in your bowel. Do not take more than 500mg a day. The capsules contain sorbitol, so they are not suitable if you have hereditary fructose intolerance, and the colouring E110 (sunset yellow) may cause a reaction in some people. Tell us if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. See your GP if the constipation lasts more than a week, keeps coming back, or comes with bleeding or unexplained weight loss.
