Common questions

What’s the difference between a stool softener like Dioctyl and other laxatives?
Docusate sodium softens: it lets water and fat mix into the stool so it isn’t hard and dry. A stimulant such as senna makes the bowel wall push, bulk-forming fibre like ispaghula adds bulk, and a macrogol sachet holds water in the bowel. Our pharmacist can match the type to what is actually causing your constipation.
How long does Dioctyl take to work?
Capsules are not fast — NHS guidance says docusate capsules take one to three days, so it suits softening hard stools rather than urgent relief. Drink plenty of fluid while taking it. See your GP if you are still constipated after a few days, or at any point if you notice blood in your poo, unexplained weight loss, or a sudden lasting change in bowel habit.
Why is docusate suggested when you have piles or a fissure?
Because straining is the problem. Dioctyl is licensed to prevent hard, dry stools and reduce straining where haemorrhoids or an anal fissure are present, giving sore skin a chance to settle. It is often used alongside treatment for the piles themselves — see our piles page — and our pharmacist can check the combination.
Can I take Dioctyl in pregnancy, and can children have it?
Both are worth checking with us first. The licence says to use Dioctyl in pregnancy only if the benefit outweighs the risk, and docusate passes into breast milk, so it is used with caution while breastfeeding. Safety in children under 12 has not been established — never give a laxative to a child without advice from our pharmacist or your GP.
