Senna 7.5 mg Tablets are a stimulant laxative for the short-term relief of occasional constipation. Each tablet contains sennosides equivalent to 7.5 mg.

How does it help?

Senna is a stimulant laxative that acts on the muscles of the bowel wall to encourage movement, helping to produce a bowel motion, usually 8 to 12 hours after taking it.

Who should take care?

For short-term use only; do not take continuously for long periods, and see your doctor if constipation persists. Not for use if you have unexplained stomach pain, nausea or vomiting, or a sudden change in bowel habit that lasts more than two weeks. Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Don't use if you're allergic to any of the ingredients. Speak to our pharmacist if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, taking other medicines, or have any ongoing health conditions.

Common questions

Senna is herbal — does that make it gentler than other laxatives?
Not necessarily. Sennosides come from the senna plant, but they act as a stimulant laxative, working on the muscles of the bowel wall to get things moving; abdominal pain and cramping are recognised side effects. Bulk-forming fibre and macrogol sachets work more gently — see our constipation page. ‘Herbal’ describes where it comes from, not how strong it is.
Can I take senna every day?
No — it is for occasional constipation, and the licence says not to use it for more than a week without medical advice. Long-term use of stimulant laxatives can impair how the bowel works and lead to depending on them. If you need a laxative most days, that is worth a conversation with our pharmacist or your GP rather than another pack.
Can I take senna if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?
Not this product. Pregnancy and breastfeeding are both listed as contraindications in its licence, and the active metabolites pass into breast milk. Constipation is very common in pregnancy, so speak to our pharmacist, your midwife or your GP — there are laxatives that suit, and changes to fibre and fluid usually come first.
Who shouldn’t take these tablets, and when should I see a doctor?
This general-sale 20-tablet pack is licensed for adults aged 18 and over. Senna is not for anyone with a bowel blockage or narrowing, appendicitis, inflammatory bowel disease, severe dehydration, or tummy pain of unknown cause. See your GP if there is no bowel movement after three days, or for blood in your poo, unexplained weight loss, or a lasting change in bowel habit.
