What is Dulcolax Twelve Plus 10mg Suppositories 12?

A suppository that you insert into the back passage for the short-term relief of occasional constipation. Each one contains 10mg of bisacodyl, a stimulant laxative, and is used when you need your bowels to open fairly soon.

How does it help?

Once in the rectum, bisacodyl is broken down into its active form, which stimulates the lining of the lower bowel and rectum. This sets off the muscle contractions that move stool along and draws water into the bowel, softening the stool so it is easier to pass. Suppositories usually work in about 20 minutes, typically between 10 and 30 minutes.

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Use no more than one suppository a day, unwrapped and inserted pointed end first. Do not use it every day for more than five days without finding out the cause of the constipation - long-term daily use of stimulant laxatives can harm how the bowel works and upset the body's salt balance, and laxatives do not help with weight loss. Do not use it if you have severe tummy pain with feeling or being sick, a bowel blockage, appendicitis, a flare of Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, severe dehydration, an anal fissure or ulcerative proctitis. Speak to us first if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have kidney problems, or take water tablets or steroid medicines. Suppositories can cause some local discomfort, and a small amount of blood in the stool can occur - if your symptoms get worse, speak to a doctor or pharmacist.
