What is Micralax Micro-enema 12 x 5ml?

Micralax is a micro-enema - a small 5ml tube with a long, soft nozzle that you insert into the back passage to relieve constipation. It is used when a quick, local result is needed, for example for someone who is bed-bound, around childbirth, or before some hospital bowel examinations. It usually works within 5 to 15 minutes.

How does it help?

Sodium citrate draws water into the lower bowel to soften the stool, and sodium alkylsulphoacetate acts as a wetting agent, helping the water penetrate and loosen hard, compacted stool so it is easier to pass. Because it acts only in the rectum, it works quickly and does not have to travel through the whole digestive system first.

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Do not use if you have inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. For rectal use only: gently insert the full length of the nozzle and squeeze out the contents. Enemas are for occasional use - if you need one regularly, or constipation has lasted more than a week, see your GP or talk to our pharmacist. Seek medical advice first if you have bleeding from the back passage, severe stomach pain, or have recently had bowel surgery. Our pharmacist will check it is right for you before it is dispensed.
