What is Senokot Max Strength 12 Years Plus Tablets 48?

A senna tablet for the short-term relief of occasional constipation. Senna is a plant-based stimulant laxative, and each Max Strength tablet contains the equivalent of 15mg of sennosides, taken as a single tablet at night.

How does it help?

The sennosides pass through the stomach and small intestine without being absorbed. In the large bowel, the bacteria that normally live there turn them into their active form, which stimulates the bowel muscles to move stool along and keeps more water in the bowel so the stool is softer. Because of this journey, it usually works 8 to 12 hours after you take it, which is why it is taken at bedtime.

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Take one tablet at night and do not use it for more than one week - usually two or three doses in that week is enough. Do not take it with any other laxative. Do not take it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have a bowel blockage, appendicitis, Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, tummy pain with no known cause, or severe dehydration. Speak to a doctor first if you take heart medicines such as digoxin, medicines for heart rhythm, water tablets, steroids or liquorice root. Long-term use can stop the bowel working normally and upset the body's salt balance, and laxatives do not help with weight loss. If you have had no bowel movement after three days, or find you need laxatives every day, see a doctor or pharmacist. Each tablet contains lactose.
