What is Glycerin 4g Suppositories 12?

Glycerin (glycerol) 4g suppositories are a stimulant laxative in suppository form for the occasional treatment of constipation. This is the adult size; smaller sizes for babies and children are different products.

How does it help?

You moisten the tip with water and insert the suppository into the back passage. The glycerol draws water into the lower bowel and gently stimulates the bowel wall, which softens the stool and triggers a bowel movement. Because it acts locally in the rectum rather than passing through the whole gut, it usually works within a short time of being inserted.

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. For occasional use only - repeated or excessive use can cause diarrhoea. Do not use if you have a bowel obstruction or blockage, or if you are allergic to glycerol or gelatin. Not recommended for children; this is the adult size. If you have diabetes, be aware that glycerol may affect your blood glucose control. Best avoided in the first three months of pregnancy.
