What is Cleen Ready-to-Use Enema 133ml?
Cleen Ready-to-Use Enema is a single-use sodium phosphate enema for the relief of occasional constipation, and for emptying the lower bowel when that is needed before an examination, surgery or childbirth on the direction of a healthcare professional. It comes as a soft squeeze bottle with a pre-lubricated nozzle, ready to use with no mixing. It was previously sold in the UK under the Fleet name.
How does it help?
The phosphate salts draw water from the body into the lower bowel, which softens hard stool and stretches the bowel wall; that stretch is the signal that triggers the bowel to empty. Because it works locally in the rectum rather than travelling through the whole gut, the effect is quick, usually within 2 to 5 minutes of use. It is for occasional use only, no more than once in 24 hours, and not the answer to long-standing constipation, which our pharmacist can help you with.
Key benefits
- Works within 2 to 5 minutes, so it suits situations where a fast effect is needed
- Ready to use straight from the bottle, with a lubricated nozzle
- A single measured dose in each bottle
- Can be used for bowel clearing before a procedure when a healthcare professional has advised it
Who should take care?
Always read the patient information leaflet before use. For adults and children aged 12 and over; children aged 3 to 11 only on a doctor's direction, and never under 3. Use no more than one enema in 24 hours, as more can be harmful, and not for more than a week unless a doctor advises. Do not use if you have nausea, vomiting or stomach pain, kidney problems, heart failure, are dehydrated, or have a suspected bowel blockage, active inflammatory bowel disease, unexplained bleeding from the back passage or any bowel symptom that has not been diagnosed. Take particular care if you are elderly or frail, on a low-sodium diet, or take diuretics (water tablets), lithium or calcium channel blockers, and do not use it with any other sodium phosphate laxative. In pregnancy or breastfeeding use only as a doctor directs. If the enema does not work, or you feel faint, very thirsty or unwell afterwards, seek medical advice. Our pharmacist checks it is right for you before it is dispensed.
