What is Lactulose Oral Solution 500ml?
Lactulose is a liquid laxative used to treat constipation. It is a sugar-based syrup that is not absorbed from the gut. It works gradually, usually taking one to two days to have its full effect, so it suits people who need a gentle, regular option rather than a fast-acting one. This is a generic lactulose oral solution; the manufacturer may vary between batches but the medicine is the same.
How does it help?
Lactulose is a type of sugar that passes through the stomach and small intestine unchanged. In the large bowel, gut bacteria break it down into mild acids that draw water into the bowel, softening the stool and increasing its bulk, which encourages the bowel to move more naturally. Adults usually start with 15 to 45ml a day, then reduce to a maintenance dose of 15 to 30ml once bowel movements are regular. It can be taken neat or diluted in water.
Key benefits
- Softens stools gently rather than forcing the bowel
- Not absorbed into the body, so it acts locally in the gut
- Dose can be adjusted to find what keeps you regular
- Licensed for children of all ages when used under medical supervision
Who should take care?
Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Do not take if you have galactosaemia, a blocked bowel, a bowel perforation or a risk of perforation, or if you are allergic to lactulose. Get medical advice before use if you have abdominal pain that has not been explained. It contains small amounts of lactose, galactose and fructose, so take care if you are lactose intolerant, and do not take it if you have a rare hereditary sugar intolerance. The usual constipation dose should not affect diabetes control, but mention diabetes to the pharmacist. If it has not worked after a few days, or you need it long term, speak to the pharmacist or your doctor, because over-use can cause diarrhoea and upset the body's salt balance. Children should only be given laxatives on medical advice. Our pharmacist checks it is right for you before it is dispensed.
