What is Gaviscon Double Action Liquid?

A mint-flavour liquid for heartburn, acid reflux and indigestion. It tackles both the acid and the burning feeling that can rise into the throat.

How does it help?

Sodium alginate forms a protective raft that floats on top of the stomach contents to help stop acid rising into the food pipe, while sodium bicarbonate and calcium carbonate are antacids that neutralise excess stomach acid.

Key benefits

  • Relieves heartburn and acid reflux
  • Eases indigestion and trapped acid
  • Forms a protective barrier against reflux
  • Neutralises excess stomach acid
  • Pleasant mint flavour

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Don't use if you're allergic to any of the ingredients. Speak to our pharmacist if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, taking other medicines, on a low-sodium diet, or have any ongoing health conditions.

Common questions

What’s the difference between Gaviscon Double Action and Gaviscon Advance?
Both contain sodium alginate, which forms a raft on top of the stomach contents to hold acid down. Double Action adds two antacids — sodium bicarbonate and calcium carbonate — so it neutralises acid as well. Gaviscon Advance carries twice the alginate per dose and no calcium, so the raft does the work. Our pharmacist can help you choose.
Can I take it while I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?
Yes. Heartburn is common in pregnancy, and the product licence says it can be used while pregnant or breastfeeding where it’s clinically needed — controlled studies found no harmful effects on mother or baby. Read the leaflet first, and tell our pharmacist what else you’re taking so we can check it suits you.
Who shouldn’t use it?
The licence rules it out if you have moderate or severe kidney problems, or you’re allergic to any ingredient — it contains parabens, which can cause reactions. It’s licensed for adults and children 12 and over; under-12s only on medical advice. It’s high in sodium, so mention any low-salt diet.
How long can I keep using it, and when should I see a GP?
Alginates and antacids settle symptoms but don’t treat the cause, and the licence says to seek medical advice if you still need it after seven days running. See your GP sooner if you get heartburn most days, food sticks when you swallow, you’re often sick, or you’re losing weight without trying. More at acid reflux.
