What is Movicol 13.7 g Sachets?

Sachets of powder that dissolve in water to treat constipation and help restore a comfortable, regular bowel habit in adults.

How does it help?

Macrogol 3350 is an osmotic laxative that holds water in the bowel, softening the stool and gently increasing its bulk so it's easier and more comfortable to pass.

Key benefits

  • Treats constipation in adults
  • Softens hard stools and eases passing
  • Gentle osmotic action
  • Dissolves in water to drink
  • Convenient measured sachets

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Dissolve each sachet as directed and drink enough fluids through the day. Not for use if you have a bowel blockage or certain bowel conditions. See a doctor if constipation persists. Don't use if you're allergic to any of the ingredients. Speak to our pharmacist if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, taking other medicines, or have any ongoing health conditions. Our pharmacist checks every order before it's supplied.

Common questions

What’s the difference between Movicol and Movicol-Half?
Movicol-Half sachets contain half the macrogol 3350 of a standard 13.7 g sachet — 6.563 g against 13.125 g — with the salts halved to match. It is not the children’s version: Movicol-Half is licensed for adults, adolescents and older people, and neither is recommended under 12. Movicol Paediatric Plain is the separate product for younger children.
Is Movicol the same as Laxido or a generic macrogol sachet?
They are the same class of medicine. The NHS lists Movicol, Laxido and CosmoCol as brands of macrogol, and a standard sachet of each contains macrogol 3350 with sodium chloride, sodium bicarbonate and potassium chloride. Flavours, sachet options and the maker differ. If you have been swapped from one to another, our pharmacist can confirm the match — see our constipation page.
Can I take Movicol in pregnancy or while breastfeeding?
Yes. The Movicol licence states it can be used during pregnancy and during breast-feeding, because almost none of the macrogol is absorbed into the body, and NHS guidance agrees. Constipation often comes with pregnancy, so do mention it to your midwife or GP as well. Our pharmacist reviews it against anything else you are taking before we supply.
How long can I take it for, and when should I see a doctor?
An over-the-counter course for constipation doesn’t normally run beyond two weeks, and NHS advice is to see a doctor if you are still constipated after that. Movicol is not for anyone with a bowel blockage or perforation, or with severe inflammatory bowel disease. See someone promptly for blood in your poo, unexplained weight loss, or a sudden lasting change in bowel habit.
