What is E45 Itch Relief Cream?

E45 Itch Relief Cream is used to relieve itching and irritation linked to dry skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis and other dry, itchy skin. It moisturises while helping calm the urge to scratch.

How does it help?

It combines lauromacrogols, which have a mild local soothing action to help relieve itching, with urea, a moisturiser that helps the skin hold on to water so it feels less dry and tight.

Common questions

Is E45 Itch Relief Cream a steroid?

No. It contains lauromacrogols 3% and urea 5% — lauromacrogols act rather like a mild local anaesthetic to damp down itch, while urea helps the skin’s outer layer hold on to water. There’s no hydrocortisone or any other steroid in it, so it calms itch and dryness rather than treating active inflammation. Our pharmacist can tell you which you need.

Can I use it on a child?

The UK licence covers adults, older people, children and infants over one month old — so not newborns under a month. There’s no separate children’s strength: the pack leaflet gives the amount and how often, and our pharmacist can check it’s the right choice for your child’s skin before you use it.

Can I put it on broken, weeping or infected skin?

No. The licence rules it out on oozing, infected or acutely inflamed skin and on acute erythroderma, and it can irritate broken or inflamed areas. If a patch is weeping, crusting, filling with pus, hot or painful, or you feel feverish, get same-day advice from a GP or NHS 111 — infected eczema needs treating, not moisturising.

How is it different from ordinary E45 Cream?

E45 Moisturising Cream is a plain emollient — paraffins plus lanolin that soften skin and slow water loss. Itch Relief adds lauromacrogols for the itch itself and urea to help skin hold water, and it contains no lanolin, cetyl alcohol or parabens.
