Is Aveeno Dermexa a treatment for eczema?
It’s a cosmetic emollient for skin prone to eczema — not a licensed medicine and not a steroid — so it moisturises and soothes rather than settling an active flare. The NHS treats daily moisturising as the foundation of eczema care, used alongside anything a prescriber has given you for flares. Our pharmacist can help you work out which does what.
What does the oat in it actually do?
Dermexa uses a triple oat complex — colloidal oatmeal, oat oil and oat extract — together with ceramide. Colloidal oatmeal is a long-established skin soother, and ceramides are among the fats that make up the skin’s own barrier, so the aim is to calm the surface while helping that barrier hold moisture in. The formula is fragrance-free.
How is the Dermexa cream different from Aveeno Skin Relief Lotion?
Dermexa is the richer cream, built around ceramides for skin prone to eczema, and comes as a 200 ml tube. Skin Relief is a lighter body lotion with shea butter, aimed at very dry, sensitive skin, in 200 ml and 300 ml. When should I get eczema-prone skin looked at?
See a GP or call NHS 111 the same day if skin blisters, weeps, crusts or fills with pus, turns hot, painful or swollen, spreads suddenly, or you feel unwell or feverish — that can mean infected eczema.
