Dermol 500 Lotion is an antimicrobial emollient containing benzalkonium chloride and chlorhexidine, used for dry and pruritic (itchy) skin conditions including eczema and dermatitis, and as a soap substitute.

What is Dermol 500 Lotion?

Dermol 500 Lotion is an antimicrobial emollient for dry and itchy skin conditions such as eczema and dermatitis. It can be used as a moisturiser and as a soap substitute for washing.

How does it help?

It combines emollients, which soften and moisturise the skin, with the antimicrobial agents benzalkonium chloride and chlorhexidine, which help reduce bacteria on the skin's surface.

Key benefits

  • Soothes dry, itchy and eczema-prone skin
  • Doubles as a soap substitute for washing
  • Contains antimicrobial ingredients
  • Can be used regularly and frequently
  • Leaves a moisturising layer on the skin

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. For external use only. Emollients on dressings, clothing or bedding can be a fire risk if exposed to a naked flame, so keep away from fire. Don't use if you're allergic to any of the ingredients. Speak to our pharmacist if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, taking other medicines, or have any ongoing health conditions. Our pharmacist checks every order before it's supplied.

Common questions

How is Dermol 500 different from an ordinary moisturiser?
It is an emollient with two antimicrobials built in — benzalkonium chloride and chlorhexidine dihydrochloride, each at 0.1% — alongside liquid paraffin and isopropyl myristate. The antimicrobials help keep down bacteria on eczema-prone skin, which can make flare-ups worse where scratching has broken the surface. The leaflet says all ages, including babies, can use it — but not if you have reacted to chlorhexidine products before.
Can I use it instead of soap and shower gel?
Yes — it is licensed both as a leave-on moisturiser and as a soap substitute, which is what the NHS recommends for eczema in place of ordinary soap. Two practical points: it makes the bath or shower slippery, so take care getting in and out, and keep it out of your eyes when you wash your face. See our eczema range.
Is there really a fire risk with emollients?
Yes, and it is worth taking seriously. Paraffin-containing emollients soak into clothing, bedding and dressings, and that fabric then catches light far more easily — washing does not remove the risk. Do not smoke and stay away from naked flames or open fires while you are using it, and change and wash nightwear and bedding regularly.
When should I get eczema looked at rather than just moisturising?
Moisturising is the foundation of eczema care, but get advice if the skin is blistered, crusty, weeping or has pus-filled spots, feels hot, swollen or painful, suddenly gets much worse, or you feel unwell with a high temperature. Those can point to infected eczema or eczema herpeticum, which need proper treatment — contact your GP urgently or call NHS 111.
