What is Sebco Ointment 100g?

Sebco is a thick scalp ointment that combines three long-established ingredients - coal tar, sulfur and salicylic acid - for scalp conditions that leave the skin scaly, crusted and itchy, including psoriasis, seborrhoeic dermatitis, eczema of the scalp and dandruff.

How does it help?

Each ingredient does a different job. Coal tar slows the overactive turnover of skin cells that builds the thick scale in the first place. Sulfur helps settle the flaking and irritation on the surface. Salicylic acid is a keratolytic - it softens and loosens hardened scale so it can be combed and washed away, which also lets the other two ingredients reach the skin underneath. The ointment is massaged into the scalp, left in place for the time given in the leaflet, then shampooed out.

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Coal tar preparations stain skin, hair, clothing and bedding, so protect your pillow and towels. Do not use it on broken, weeping or infected skin, and keep it well away from the eyes - rinse thoroughly with water if any gets in. Coal tar can make skin more sensitive to sunlight, so avoid strong sun and sunbeds while you are using it. Tell us if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have ever reacted to coal tar, sulfur, salicylic acid or aspirin. If the scalp is very inflamed, weeping or not settling, our pharmacist will review it with you and can refer you to your GP.
