What is Canesten Thrush External Cream 2%?

Canesten Thrush External Cream contains clotrimazole 2% and is used to relieve the external itching and soreness caused by thrush. It comes as a 20 g tube for use on the skin around the affected area.

How does it help?

Clotrimazole is an antifungal that works by damaging the cell walls of the yeast responsible for thrush, helping to clear the infection and ease the external itching and irritation.

Common questions

Is this the same as ordinary Canesten Cream 1%?
Both contain the same antifungal, clotrimazole. Canesten Cream 1% is the broader-licence version, covering fungal skin infections generally as well as candidal vulvitis. This is the higher 2% strength, licensed specifically for the external soreness and itching of thrush and intended for use alongside a treatment for the infection inside.
Will the external cream clear thrush on its own?
Usually not. Its licence describes it as an add-on to treatment of the infection inside the vagina — it eases the itching and soreness on the outside, but the yeast internally needs an internal thrush treatment such as a vaginal cream, a pessary or a capsule. Our pharmacist can help you pick a combination that suits you.
Can my partner use it?
Yes — the licence covers applying it to a male partner’s penis, which helps stop thrush being passed back and forth between you. Bear in mind that clotrimazole creams can weaken latex condoms, diaphragms and caps, so use another form of contraception for at least five days after treatment.
When should I see a doctor rather than treat this myself?
Speak to your GP if it’s your first episode of thrush, you’re under 16 or over 60, you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, or you’ve had thrush more than twice in six months. Get checked for unusual or blood-stained discharge, sores or blisters, lower tummy pain, pain passing urine or a temperature — and if things haven’t improved within a week.
