What is Canesten Thrush Internal Cream?

Canesten Thrush Internal Cream is a single-dose clotrimazole 10% vaginal cream that treats the underlying infection of vaginal thrush. It's supplied as a pre-filled applicator for one-off use.

How does it help?

Clotrimazole is an antifungal that acts on the yeast (Candida) responsible for thrush, clearing the infection at its source inside the vagina.

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. It's for internal vaginal use only. See your GP if it's your first episode of thrush, if you're under 16 or over 60, if symptoms don't improve within 7 days, or if they keep coming back. Don't use if you're allergic to any of the ingredients. Speak to our pharmacist if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, taking other medicines, or have any ongoing health conditions. Common questions

What’s the difference between the internal cream and a pessary?

Both put clotrimazole inside the vagina as a single treatment, and both tackle the same yeast. The internal cream is a soft cream in a pre-filled applicator, which many people find gentler and more comfortable than inserting a solid pessary. Which you choose is mostly personal preference — our pharmacist is happy to talk it through.

Will it damage condoms?

Yes — laboratory testing shows clotrimazole vaginal products can weaken latex condoms, diaphragms and caps, so the manufacturer advises using another form of contraception for at least five days afterwards. It’s also best to avoid tampons, douches and spermicides while you’re treating, as they can interfere with how well it works.

Do I need the external cream as well?

The internal cream treats the infection inside the vagina; on its own it won’t do much for itching and soreness on the outside. That’s what the separate clotrimazole 2% external cream is licensed for, used alongside internal treatment. Plenty of people use both together — ask our pharmacist if you’re unsure what you need.

When should I see a doctor instead of treating thrush myself?

See your GP if this is your first episode, you’re under 16 or over 60, you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, or you’ve had thrush more than twice in six months. Get checked too for unusual or blood-stained discharge, sores or blisters, lower tummy pain, pain passing urine, or a temperature — and if symptoms haven’t improved within a week.
