Crystacide Cream is a 1% hydrogen peroxide antiseptic cream for minor superficial skin infections such as localised impetigo and infected cuts, grazes and spots.
What is Crystacide 1% Cream 40g?
Crystacide is an antiseptic cream containing stabilised hydrogen peroxide. It is licensed to treat superficial skin infections, including localised impetigo and minor infected cuts, grazes and spots. It is one of the options a pharmacist may suggest instead of an antibiotic cream for a small patch of impetigo. As a pharmacy medicine, our pharmacist checks it is right for you before it is dispensed.
How does it help?
When the cream meets the infected skin, the hydrogen peroxide releases oxygen. This oxidising action kills the bacteria causing the infection and helps lift crusts and debris from the surface, while the cream base keeps the area comfortable. Apply a thin layer to the affected skin only, two or three times a day, for no longer than three weeks.
Key benefits
- Treats localised impetigo and other minor superficial skin infections
- Antiseptic rather than antibiotic, so helps avoid unnecessary antibiotic use
- Suitable for adults and children
- A cream that stays where it is put and is simple to apply
Who should take care?
Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Keep away from the eyes and do not apply to healthy skin, or to large or deep wounds. Hydrogen peroxide can bleach fabric and hair, so let the cream absorb before dressing. Do not use for more than three weeks. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, check with the pharmacist first. If the infection is spreading, you feel unwell or feverish, or it has not improved within a week, see a pharmacist or GP. Impetigo is contagious: wash your hands after applying and do not share towels or flannels.
