What is Bonjela Cold Sore Cream?

Bonjela Cold Sore Cream is a self-care product for treating and helping to prevent cold sores on the lips and around the mouth. It is designed to be near-invisible on the skin. Please note it is different from Bonjela oral gels used inside the mouth.

Who should take care?

Is this the same as the Bonjela gel for mouth ulcers?
No — two different products sharing a family name. The Bonjela oral gels are licensed medicines used inside the mouth for mouth ulcers and sore gums. This is a cold sore cream: a self-care medical device for the outside of the lips and the skin around the mouth. Ask our pharmacist if you are not sure which one you need.
Does it contain an antiviral like aciclovir?
No. It is not a licensed medicine and contains no antiviral drug. It works physically — applied early it forms a film over the area, which the manufacturer says helps stop virus particles attaching to skin cells and shields the spot from UV light, a common cold sore trigger. Is it really invisible, and can children use it?
It is designed to disappear into the skin rather than leave the white film some cold sore creams do, which is why people reach for it before work or an evening out. It is for external use only, on the lips and the skin around the mouth — never inside the mouth. The pack states the age it is suitable from; check that before using it on a child.
When should I get a cold sore checked?
The NHS says cold sores usually clear within 10 days. Speak to your GP if yours has not started healing by then, if it is unusually large or painful, if your gums are swollen and sore, or if your immune system is weakened. A sore near the eye needs same-day advice, and never kiss a newborn while you have one.
