How is this different from an ordinary anti-dandruff shampoo?

It’s a licensed medicine rather than a cosmetic. Nizoral contains ketoconazole 2%, an antifungal that acts on the scalp yeast behind dandruff, so it treats the cause instead of washing flakes away — which is why it’s used far less often than an everyday shampoo. It’s for adults and adolescents; for a young child’s flaky scalp, ask our pharmacist first.

How long should I give it before deciding it is not working?

Give it a fair run, but not an indefinite one. The product information says to speak to a doctor or pharmacist if the scalp hasn’t cleared within four weeks. The NHS adds that you should get it checked if your scalp is red or swollen or very itchy, or if you have flaky itchy patches on your face or elsewhere.

Can I use it on colour-treated or grey hair?

You can, but it’s worth knowing that changes in hair colour and hair texture are both listed among the possible side effects in the product information, along with hair loss.
