What is Compeed Cold Sore Patch?

Compeed Cold Sore Patches are discreet, drug-free patches that cover and help heal a cold sore. Each pack contains 15 patches, which are nearly invisible once applied.

How does it help?

The patches use hydrocolloid gel technology to cover the cold sore, keeping the area moist to support natural healing while forming a protective barrier.

Key benefits

  • Drug-free treatment for cold sores
  • Nearly invisible once applied
  • Covers the cold sore to reduce the urge to touch it
  • Supports the skin's natural healing
  • 15 patches per pack

Who should take care?

Follow the instructions on the pack, including how to apply and change the patch. Stop using if irritation occurs. Speak to our pharmacist if your cold sore does not improve, spreads, or you get frequent outbreaks.

Common questions

Is there any medicine in a Compeed cold sore patch?
No — there is no active ingredient in it. The patch is a hydrocolloid gel that behaves like a second skin: it seals the cold sore, holds moisture in so it is less likely to scab, and keeps your fingers off it. Compeed say the patch is for adults, and it has not been tested on children or in pregnancy or breastfeeding.
How long does one patch stay on, and when do I change it?
Each patch keeps working for up to 12 hours. Compeed advise not to pull one off early — leave it until it starts lifting at the edges, then replace it. You can begin at the very first tingle or at any later stage of an outbreak. The patch is water-resistant, so washing and showering are fine, though a long soak can loosen it.
Can I put a cold sore cream on underneath the patch?
Better not. Compeed advise against creams or ointments under the patch — they stop it sticking, and there is no clinical data on combining the two. Choose one route: the patch, or an antiviral cream such as aciclovir. Sunscreen can go on top of a patch. Our pharmacist can help you decide — see our cold sore treatments.
When should I get a cold sore looked at rather than patched?
The NHS says cold sores usually clear within 10 days. See your GP if yours has not started to heal by then, if it is unusually large or painful, if your gums are swollen and sore, or if your immune system is weakened. Anything close to the eye needs advice the same day. The patch is not for genital herpes, mouth ulcers or shingles.
