What is Zovirax Cold Sore Cream?

A cold sore cream for treating the tingling, blisters and soreness of cold sores on the lips and around the mouth. Best started at the first sign.

It contains aciclovir, an antiviral that acts on the cold sore virus to help stop it multiplying, so the cold sore can heal.

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Don't use if you're allergic to any of the ingredients. For external use on the lips and around the mouth only. Speak to our pharmacist if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, taking other medicines, or have a weakened immune system. See a doctor if cold sores are severe, frequent or don't heal.

Common questions

Does it still help once the blister has appeared?
It works best started at the very first tingle, before the blister forms — that is when the antiviral has most to work with. Starting later is still worthwhile, but expect less of a difference. The pack leaflet sets out the treatment schedule and our pharmacist can check it suits you. If the cold sore has not begun healing after 10 days, see your GP.
Is Zovirax the same as plain aciclovir cold sore cream?
In substance, yes. Zovirax is the brand name; the medicine inside is aciclovir 5% w/w, the same strength used in UK cold sore creams sold under the ingredient name. This is the general-sale Zovirax presentation from Haleon, supplied as a 2 g tube or a 2 g pump. Our cold sore page sets the options out side by side.
Can I use it inside my mouth, near my eye, or for genital herpes?
No. The licence covers cold sores on the lips and face only. It is not for mucous membranes — inside the mouth or in the eye — and it must not be used for genital herpes. Take real care near the eyes: a sore close to the eye, or a suspected genital infection, needs seeing rather than self-treating.
Can I use it in pregnancy, or if my immune system is weakened?
Very little aciclovir is absorbed through the skin, and the product information does not identify a pattern of harm in pregnancy — but check with our pharmacist first if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you know your immune system is weakened, by chemotherapy or immunosuppressant medicines for example, the cream is not recommended and you should speak to your doctor instead.
