Medicated nail lacquer containing amorolfine 5% w/v, licensed OTC for mild fungal nail infection affecting up to 2 nails in adults 18 and over. 3 ml GSL pack.

What is Amorolfine 5% Medicated Nail Lacquer?

A medicated nail lacquer for treating mild fungal nail infections affecting up to two nails in adults aged 18 and over. Applied like a nail varnish.

How does it help?

It contains amorolfine, an antifungal that works within the nail to stop the fungus growing and help clear the infection as the nail grows out.

Key benefits

  • Treats mild fungal nail infection
  • Applied like a nail varnish
  • Once- or twice-weekly application (see leaflet)
  • For up to two affected nails
  • Available without a prescription

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. For external use on the nails only. Don't use if you're allergic to any of the ingredients, if you're under 18, or if more than two nails are affected — speak to us or your doctor instead. Do not use it if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding — the licence advises against use in pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Speak to our pharmacist if you are are diabetic, or have any ongoing health conditions. Fungal nails are slow to clear, so treatment may need several months.

Common questions

Is amorolfine the same as Curanail?
Yes — the medicine inside is identical. Amorolfine 5% w/v is the active ingredient and Curanail is one of the brands it’s sold under in the UK. Both are licensed for exactly the same thing: mild fungal infection of up to two nails in adults aged 18 and over. This is the generic version.
How long before I see a healthy nail?
Longer than most people expect. The lacquer works as the nail grows out, so you’re waiting on nail growth rather than on the medicine. Treatment usually runs about six months for a fingernail and nine to twelve months for a toenail. Watch the new nail coming from the base, not the old damaged tip.
Can I still wear nail varnish?
Ordinary varnish, yes — the product information says to leave at least 10 minutes after the medicated lacquer has been applied before painting cosmetic varnish over the top. Artificial and gel nails are different: avoid those for the whole course. The pack includes cleansing swabs for preparing the nail beforehand.
When is this not the right treatment?
Amorolfine isn’t for use in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, and not if you have diabetes, poor circulation in your hands or feet, or a weakened immune system — those need a doctor’s eye. Get it looked at too if more than two nails are involved, the nail is painful or swollen, or a dark stripe runs down it. See nail infection.
