What is Canesten 1% Solution?

Canesten 1% Solution is a clear antifungal liquid containing clotrimazole. It is licensed for fungal skin infections caused by dermatophytes (such as ringworm and athlete's foot), yeasts, moulds and other fungi. Because it is a liquid rather than a cream, it is particularly suited to hairy areas of skin, and it is also licensed for fungal infections of the outer ear (otitis externa) and of the ear (otomycosis).

How does it help?

Clotrimazole stops fungi building their outer membrane properly, so the fungal cells cannot grow and the infection clears. Apply it thinly and evenly to the affected area 2 or 3 times a day and rub in gently - a few drops cover an area about the size of a hand. Keep using it for at least two weeks after all signs of the infection have gone, to help stop it coming back.

Who should take care?

Always read the patient information leaflet before use. Do not use it if you are allergic to clotrimazole or to macrogol 400. Do not get it in the eyes. It can cause skin irritation, a rash or a burning feeling - stop using it and speak to our pharmacist if this happens, and get medical help straight away if you have signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing. Ear pain, discharge and itching have several causes, so if it is for your ear our pharmacist will ask about your symptoms and may advise that the ear is examined first. If you are pregnant, use it only under the supervision of a doctor or midwife. If you are breastfeeding and using it near the nipple, wash the area before feeding.
